What is a CSA? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. A member of a CSA will pay the farmer at the beginning of the season for a weekly delivery of veggies, meats, eggs, and fruits. This allows the farmer to focus on growing a wide variety of crops, pick them at the best time and give the member a cheaper than retail price without incurring a large start up debt in a very risky business.
The farmer has a gaurunteed sale and a direct relationship with the consumer/member. The member gets locally grown food that they know is grown in their region especially for them without the retail mark up.  It's a mutually beneficial arrangement.

2013 marks our fifth year offering a Community Supported Agriculture Program and providing food for over 100 members. Our produce and meats can also be found at Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op, The Harvest Moon and Sweet Providence Farm Market, Eats and Annie Kay's Natural Food Store.

We sell shares of meat to our CSA members. You must prepay before we slaughter. By doing this you become an owner of the live animal. Once we have sold all shares of the animal, we harvest and prepare the meat with a professional butcher. All meat is cut, vacum packed and frozen in .5 to 3.5 pound packs depending on the cut.

BEEF - $150 at $7.50 per pound. A share is 20 pounds. It is approximately 10 pounds of ground beef/and or burger patties, 7 pounds of steaks (2 - ribeye, 2- t-bone, 1- sirloin, 1 flank or tenderized round), 1 stew meat and 1 roast.

PORK - $60 at $6.00 per pound. A share is 10 pounds. It is about 5 pounds of seasoned sausage in 1 pound packs, 1 roast and 3 pounds of pork chops/ and or tenderloin. You may request ground pork instead of sausage.

All our animals are grazed on our farm for a minimum of 4 months before slaughter. They have plenty of room and healthy organically managed pasture. We supplement their diet with vegetarian grain feed and kelp. We only give our cows a very small amount of feed in order to keep them friendly. They are essentially grass fed. We do not use antibiotics, growth hormones or internal pesticides. We use natural, organic wormers. Our pigs are fed certified organic feed for the last 4-5 weeks of their life.

Why is grass fed better? The Biodynamic Association has sponsored studies which have demonstrated that meat, eggs, and milk will contain fairly high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids when the animals are grazing healthy forage every day. However if these same animals are takin off pasture and placed in a feed lot or contained feeding area and then fed grain and only dry hay, they will lose all their omega 3 fatty acids in approximately 14 days. Omega 3 fatty acids are responsible for many important functions within our bodies such as maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, supporting brain functions such as memory and anti depression compounds/chemicals created by the body, healthy hair and skin oils, and joint and muscular flexibility and resilience.
